[No.10] Deterrence

-reflection of Simulations p58-75

The chapter of Simulations discusses about the concept of war. Every country is trying to make something that they hope they will never need to use it to against the other people in the world.  Baudrillard claims that "War 'spontaneously' came to an end when the objective had been attained. This is why it was de-escalated, demobilized so easily" (67), after knowing the existence of nuclear bomb, people starts to afraid of the power of it even it is not going to be used normally. I think the idea of cold war is dangerous because if people create strong weapon only because they have the potential to create and use it, this is not going to stop.

"the very possibility of paralyzing a whole country with the flick of a switch makes it impossible that electrical engineers will ever utilize this weapon" (73)

The simulation of war is different than what we discuss in previous chapter, because this threat is not visible for the public, but it is potentially increasing in an invisible way. And the public has no power to control the bomb making process to continue, or the decision of throwing the bomb to somewhere, all we have is a simulation thought of what will happen if the bomb explode, and that simulacra which never happen is the deterrence to keep us being civilized and live in peace.

Another thing that bring my attention is in this week the powerpoint slide which shows a video talks about the function of the nuclear station. It says the fuel of nuclear bomb need to be stored under a cool pool in order to lower the temperature of the chemical. If the machine which keep maintaining the weapon get shut down, the nuclear is going to have implosion. How interesting it is that human creates something that is too powerful that ourselves cannot even control it easily in order to keep the surface of the world looks "peaceful"?

I am still wondering the connection between nuclear and communist. What connection can we make about orbit and nuclear and communist?  The potential threat of communism's government that they can make some big choice to change the whole country's order and way of function by a simple decision because the public has no right to control any political action?
