[Project Proposal] Childhood Simulation

For the final project, I am collaborating with Hong and Sally together to create an interactive installation work with a theme of “Childhood Simulation”, here is our outline proposal link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17zgHe78S7xj1EVE7GytCIUrwoYuHqPtiinxMAjKivP4/edit?usp=sharing

Our collaboration starts from me saying that “I am going to use an old crt TV for my art capstone”, then Sally mentioned that old TV feels like a childhood memory because we all used to have that type of big chunk TV back home when we were younger. Then we decide that maybe we can use that TV to recreate how our home used to look like. With that initial thought, I start to think about our installation work as a childhood simulation but with the concept of “there is no return”. I want to convey the message that childhood has past and been stored in our memories. With the message of loss, Hong said that we can have one space representing the “childhood”, with a comparison of the “present”. So that while we are losing the control of the past, we are in charge of our own future.

One concise idea about the “present” space is that we are thinking about placing a mirror against the wall with the childhood space literally behind the mirror, indicating that our childhood has been left behind and they are in the past. What is in front of us is ourselves with our own figure, reflection of how we look nowadays. While facing the reality, we can write down our unknown future together.

These are some reference I found online that could inspire our team when we are building our space:

A Room With Stuffed Animals

Window To The Sky

Balloon & Hanging Props

Kid's Drawing

  1. This is such a cool idea. I love the thought about the mirror separating past from present. I think that this has the potential to explore dark places (childhood trauma, the inherent level of fear involved in growing up) or sweet fluffy spaces (nostalgia for good times gone by).
